Fair Play


I was feeling a little bummed out because we didn't really get to travel this summer. I knew that in advance, but I thought we could get some day trips or overnights in, which didn't really happen either. BUT my friend Kate came to the pool party last night and brought 4 extra State Fair tickets, and so we got to go for a 3rd time, and that pretty much made up for it.


We went with Ximena and Beatrix on the opening day, after we picked up Beatrix from school. Ximena has not had much Fair experience, so we wanted to show her all our favorite things: the stunt dogs, the malts at the dairy building, International Marketplace, the Miracle of Life barn, Beatrix's prize-winning essay, Sweet Martha's, the gondolas, and so much more. Of course, Ximena showed us all up by donating blood. But she did get her Dilly Dog, and the fawaffle from Baba's (yum!).


Then, on Sunday, my old friend Fran came into town and we went to see The Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge at the Grandstand. I don't know which part was better — the concert, or spending time with Fran.


We also got to try some of the new foods that we had wanted to, such as the delicious lobster croissant from Scenic 61 in the new foodie area, and the fried tofu bites:



I also got to try the Space Beer at The Hideaway which was so much fun!


And yes, the concert was amazing! The Indigo Girls were as great as ever, but I had never see Melissa Etheridge live before and she was absolutely incredible. What a musician!



And then, of course, the Sweet Martha's workers dancing on the street tempted us to get another bucket of cookies.

Then tonight, with the tickets that Kate gave us, we went back to try a few more foods and people-watch.


And got the best new food of the fair, the raspberry beer ice cream, which was astounding!



So nothing earthshaking (except Ximena giving blood) but lots of fun — and cookies, new foods, and friends and family!

House on the Rock vs. Taliesin

When I was young, my dad took me to House on the Rock . I never understood why he took me there, and not to Taliesin at the same time...until this trip. The first garden at HOTR Taliesin There's a story (since proved wrong, for any number of reasons), that Alex Jordan built HOTR because he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on a house and Wright refused. But that contrast stayed in my mind this trip. Though House on the Rock has some cozy spaces in the house itself... ...it's really about the show, the razzle-dazzle. In fact, one thing that we learned about the house is that Jordan only ever spent 4 nights in the house ever. he built it as a showcase, as a tourist attraction. And it succeeds, even though it's kind of exhausting. It's also a place for him to showcase all of his collections, from carousels to dollhouses to firearms to cars to jewelers models to musical rooms to full-built towns. I think my dad aspired to that, though all he really seemed to collect...

So Patrick and I just finished our #yearcompass books (which got delayed for all kinds of reasons this year, the main part being when Quickbooks Online locked me out for days and I had to rebuild everything, but I digress. The final part of the process is to set your word for the year — so much better than a resolution. Last year, my word was BUILD, and I do think I spent a lot of the year building in many ways — physical projects, building clients, building relationships... This year, my word was going to be GROW. But *maybe* in this case the delay was good. Because I don't know if I can dedicate myself to growing in 2025. I might just need to try to stay sane. (and also I had a tarot session on New year's Eve that did not make "Grow" seem like the best choice.) So after a lot of back and forth, my word became "ATTEND," and I like that a lot.
