Countdown to Christmas - Post #7 - Dayton's Elves

As previously stated, my mom was the queen of the Christmas activities. A big tradition, since the time I was tiny, was to go shopping downtown, have dinner, and visit the 8th floor of Dayton's to see the big Christmas exhibit.


As I grew older, and began to know the people who designed those exhibits (hat tip to y'all), they did not become less magical — in fact, they became more so, because I knew all the care and work that went into the shows.


Even as shopping and dining became less prevalent downtown, we stuck with tradition. But then of course Dayton's closed.

A local family, however, purchased 24 of the elves somehow (can you imagine that conversation? "Honey, you'll never guess what I bought today!") They began restoring them, and acquired a few more, and this year they set them up on the porch of their home at 1887 Saunders for people to visit. There's a FB page on it here.



Patrick and I went last night and it was truly magical. What a holiday gift to folks!

TPT also has a special they produced on the 8th floor show called "Remember the Magic," but I have not yet seen it. Seems like there is a lot of interest in the topic and someone should take note.

In 2019, we were on our way back from spring break when Cheryl, who Beatrix had interned with at GiffyDog, reached out to us about fostering a pomeranian (since she knew Beatrix loved the breed). The day we got back, the person who had been fostering him brought him over. Choosing Happy

This post is brought to you by a few thoughts from yesterday: First and foremost, Patrick's new book that he wrote for Beatrix for her sixteenth birthday. Available for a hot second before we leave for spring break tomorrow. The response of someone he knows on the internet, who wrote yesterday that he had decided years ago that he would never be happy (and reading his posts, he seems to be right.). It was one of the saddest things I've encountered in a long time. A friend's social media post, in which she discusses another person's comment of " I really think a sizable proportion of the population has become addicted to being angry" with the sage response of " I think a lot of them are doing it because it's more enjoyable to be angry than to be depressed." New York (Area) College Visits

Though we have had a lot of fun and spent time with friends this trip (more on that later), the main reason was COLLEGE VISITING and we hit that out of the park! We started bright and early Wednesday with Sarah Lawrence, which is where we learned not to trust how long Maps says it takes to get somewhere because east coast traffic suddenly gets a lot longer while you are driving (I had kind of forgotten about that). We arrived late, but still within the info session. When we started on the tour we realized how magical this lovely little campus is (perhaps right around the time we turned the corner to see the deer grazing on the hillside). We loved the thoughtful way the school goes about scheduling and the great social sense. It was a wonderful way to start college visits!
