A Day to Myself

Lumiére opened last night (more on that later), and today was a two-show day for my tired performer and even more tired rigger, so I had a day to myself.

It stared by being given some phlox and some astilbe, which I planted over at Ashland. The back bed is almost done! The jasmine is in bloom over there and I love it so much.

I then went over to an open house at the home that had been owned by Sally French, where she had held so many wonderful events. It had been years since I had been there and I had never seen the whole thing, so it was really fun to go explore it. Her spirit is in every inch of the house and it is gorgeous! If you are in the Twin Cities and looking for an incredibly distinctive home that knows how to throw an arts event (albeit one that needs some work), you should seriously consider this one. I then headed over to my client 825 Arts, where one of the artists membership participants was holding a beeswax wrap making workshop (the kind of thing you make to cover a dish or a bowl instead of plastic film. It was an incredibly fulfilling project and fun to do with others, including running into my friend Jun-Li.


Following that, I stopped at a pet supply giveaway where I picked up a toy that Ernie and Winston love, and at Buffalo Exchange where they certainly did not want my clothes. I also picked up some art from a Denver artist from the free board, which in my opinion adds just the right amount of quirkiness to the sunroom.

I got to hang with my feet in the pool and talk to my aunt and cousins, and join Patrick and the riggers for dinner at Shamrocks. So all in all, a pretty perfect day.

It's too hot to finish the garden at Ashland, so I guess it's time for some laundry and pool party prep!

House on the Rock vs. Taliesin

When I was young, my dad took me to House on the Rock . I never understood why he took me there, and not to Taliesin at the same time...until this trip. The first garden at HOTR Taliesin There's a story (since proved wrong, for any number of reasons), that Alex Jordan built HOTR because he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on a house and Wright refused. But that contrast stayed in my mind this trip. Though House on the Rock has some cozy spaces in the house itself... ...it's really about the show, the razzle-dazzle. In fact, one thing that we learned about the house is that Jordan only ever spent 4 nights in the house ever. he built it as a showcase, as a tourist attraction. And it succeeds, even though it's kind of exhausting. It's also a place for him to showcase all of his collections, from carousels to dollhouses to firearms to cars to jewelers models to musical rooms to full-built towns. So Patrick and I just finished our #yearcompass books (which got delayed for all kinds of reasons this year, the main part being when Quickbooks Online locked me out for days and I had to rebuild everything, but I digress. The final part of the process is to set your word for the year — so much better than a resolution. Last year, my word was BUILD, and I do think I spent a lot of the year building in many ways — physical projects, building clients, building relationships... This year, my word was going to be GROW. But *maybe* in this case the delay was good. Because I don't know if I can dedicate myself to growing in 2025. I might just need to try to stay sane. (and also I had a tarot session on New year's Eve that did not make "Grow" seem like the best choice.) So after a lot of back and forth, my word became "ATTEND," and I like that a lot.
