Oslo Highlights

Ok, I realize this is of very little interest to anyone but me (especially this much later), but since I didn't keep a trip journal, I need to get this down somewhere!

Sightseeing Highlights:
-  Finding our way to — and from — Cafe Sara on the first night
-  Wandering Vigeland Park with the boys and Beatrix, imitating the statues
-  Exploring the shops of Aker Brygge, and the design store for clothing
-  Grocery shopping!
-  Interacting with the technology at the Nobel Center
-  The lunch cruise around the Oslofjord, with prawns and sunshine
-  The Parliament tour
-  Looking out over the garden
-  Driving around Grunerlokka
-  Day trip to Drobak
-  Bygdoy peninsula, and the museums
-  Chatting with Pete and Kari on the phone

Moments from the wedding:
-  The beautiful evening of the rehearsal dinner in Eidsvoll
-  Finding the coolness of the church
-  Wrin playing the Hardanger fiddle
-  "This is the sound of one voice"
-  Beautiful Kari walking down the aisle, and proud Pete
-  Talking to everyone after, and photos
-  Agnes giving directions
-  Driving up the hill to Frognersetern, passing Holmenkollen
-  Champagne on the terrace
-  The incredible meal:  salmon, fish/suck, pineapple cake and then a second set of cakes, all with wonderful wine!
-  The toasts, and the friendliness of Kari's relatives
-  Pete and Kari's pledges to each other
-  Watching Max and Miles with the Norwegian girls
-  Walking in the foyer with Beatrix, looking at the gifts
-  Talking to other parents, meeting Tuva
-  Talking to Pete about my mom
-  Seeing Kari change into her tango dress
-  Sitting in the little nook above, watching people
-  The tango
-  Dancing, watching Patrick dance with Beatrix
-  Driving back down the hill, watching the lights on the magical night

But the world DOES need my daughter's take on it, and she doesn't blog, so here I am. New Year's Eve 2023

I did not want to be laying in bed, wearing a fleece onesie and still shivering, while my husband and daughter headed out to the several wonderful NYE parties we have planned. I have a beautiful new dress that I got in Duluth for tonight, and was looking forward to the collection of friends we would be seeing. Our friend Whitney in particular is throwing the last party at her B and B, and it's breaking my heart not to go. But I feel logey and coughy, and more to the point, I have a low fever, and I don't want to mess around with possibly getting anyone sick. I'm still holding out hope that I'll miraculously feel better and the fever was a mistaken reading, but I doubt that. And I feel lucky to have 3 sets of people who want me in their lives tonight and who I don't want to get sick. As our yoga teacher Viv says, it's not like a page turns and everything is magic. Choosing Happy

This post is brought to you by a few thoughts from yesterday: First and foremost, Patrick's new book that he wrote for Beatrix for her sixteenth birthday. Available for a hot second before we leave for spring break tomorrow. The response of someone he knows on the internet, who wrote yesterday that he had decided years ago that he would never be happy (and reading his posts, he seems to be right.). It was one of the saddest things I've encountered in a long time. A friend's social media post, in which she discusses another person's comment of " I really think a sizable proportion of the population has become addicted to being angry" with the sage response of " I think a lot of them are doing it because it's more enjoyable to be angry than to be depressed."
