Memorial Day Cabin Weekend

Friday night we had the soft open for the pool, and Saturday morning we headed up to open the Osakis family cabin. It was raining and misty as we made our traditional stop at Flour and Flower. The mist continues as we reached Osakis and started to curve around the lake, but honestly we thought that was perfect.

We would take advantage of the weather to get a thorough cleaning of the cabin done, then as it cleared up, head out to get any supplies needed, catch The Mandolorian and Grogu at the The Long Drive-In, hang out some on Sunday before headed up to Itasca to fulfill Patrick's bucket list item of seeing the Head of the Mississippi. Epic weekend.

The cabin had other plans.

You might remember that Patrick's words for 2026 were "Adapt and Adjust" and mine is "Resilience." So here was a great chance to put this into practice.

We got everything vacuumed and swept, if not mopped. We moved all the furniture out, and uncovered everything. We out knick-knacks back up on dusted (if not wet-wiped) shelved and counters. We shook out rugs and mats, and put pillows in place. We did everything we could, given the constraints. (Though now of course I am thinking of the things we did not do, like moving the lawn chairs outside — sorry, folks!)

Then, we did what we could to salvage the day.

We spent several hours at Beatrix's favorite place, Vintage Village. The minute he saw us drive in, Jerry put coffee on the (wood-burning stove), pulled a fresh batch of cookies in the oven, and we spent actually a few hours there chatting, seeing the animals, shopping, and generally hanging out.

From there, we headed to Carlos Creek/22 Northmen for lunch/dinner and a drink.

Then, we came back to the Twin Cities and ended up having wine with our friends the Chelimskys that night.

We did not get the bucket list item of Itasca,or the relaxing weekend, or seeing friends in the area. We DID get the new experiences of opening the cabin (which we have not done before), and up and back in the same day, and got to do some of the things that are important to us. We thoroughly confused the dogs. We had good time together, and have something to remember. So I'm calling it a success!
