Countdown to Christmas - Post #5 - Holiday Parties!

Between exams and Patrick having covid and me being stressed with work, it's been hard as hell to get ready for the holidays this year and I have been really sad with missing out on a lot of the fun and anticipation.

Today we got to make up for it a little. We started out at our friends' Chip and Amy's (and Axel's!), which is a great holiday open house they throw every year. Great food (by Chowgirls and Marc Heu), interesting people from all of their connections, and a lovely vibe. Last year we stayed until the bitter end and the high end whiskey came out, but this year we were triple-booked.


Next our friends Nancy and David were having an open house. Beatrix goes to school with their daughter, and the party was a mix of adults and teens. We stopped on the way at my aunt and uncle's so we could grab my Norwegian cousin's teens, so they could attend a party with American teens, and I think everyone had a good time.

Then I headed out to my friend Marta's for a lovely casual event with fluffy socks and cocktails and wine and gifts and awesome women hanging out together, and it was just what I needed.

Christmas is best when it's about getting together with friends and those you love.

When I was young, my dad took me to House on the Rock . I never understood why he took me there, and not to Taliesin at the same time...until this trip. The first garden at HOTR Taliesin There's a story (since proved wrong, for any number of reasons), that Alex Jordan built HOTR because he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on a house and Wright refused. Coya

Our amazing Coya passed today at a little over 15 years of age. Thanks so much to the amazing staff at the Animal Humane Society who helped her go with dignity and grace, and allowed us all to be there with her. When we lost Geronimo, I was low-key looking for another keeshond, and became involved with several keeshond groups online. Most had coalesced around closing down a notorious New York puppy mill, but I made friends all over the country (and in Canada) who cared about the breed. You are all amazing people and I care about you so much. When Wendy found out about a backyard breeder in Western Wisconsin who had a dog on Craigslist, so grabbed Bill (who had Sapphire, one of the puppy mill dogs) and they went to rescue her. Once they got her out of there, Wendy needed a home for her, and so 4-year old Coya came to us. Why I'm Voting for Kaohly Her

Several people have asked me why I am such a committed Kaohly Her voter, so I thought I would drop some of my thoughts.  (Social media can be a terrible place for this, so PLEASE feel free to ask me more about my feelings in person!) I've known Melvin Carter for a long, long time. I consider him a friend, if not a close one. Our daughters are the same age and I have pictures of them together as babies at Songs of Hope concerts. He's been a good ear for Patrick, on one issue in particular. I was at his inauguration. He's a good man. But I'm not voting for him. I've only known Kaohly since she first ran as my house representative, in the seat Erin Murphy was vacating. I co-hosted one of her first fundraisers. She supported the bonding bill for FilmNorth (and for Playwrights' Center).
