See Art, Feel Better
I know I've been talking a lot about art events lately. But to be honest, seeing shows and exhibits is one the only ways I am coping with things right now, and I think it might help you as well. It has the added bonus of supporting local, grassroots economic efforts. It builds community; I can promise you that you will feel better when in a room with other people, experiencing art together. Felly recession-y? Many of the things I am recommending are free, or low cost. Seriously, give it a try!
I'm presenting a short riff on the importance of preservation at Zeitgeist's new works this week. April 15 and 17 at Nautilus's space in Lowertown, at 7:30. A whole new take on the subject.
Want a side of absurdism with your anti-facism? Ionesco's Rhinoceros, by Pangea World Theater, plays at the Southern through this weekend.
Similar topic, different take. I've written before about my friend Dan Smith's show of his mother's work, which opens at the former FilmNorth site tomorrow and runs most days (closed Mondays) from 3-7:30. Free. Stunning. Don't miss it.Beatrix's circus show runs at Circus Juventas start next week, running April 25-27 and May 2-4. She's in every show in various acts and I am so proud of her. You'll have so much fun if you go! Limited tickets remain, but there are some left. There's also a Community Carnival there on May 4 in the afternoon.
Because of circus, Beatrix is not performing in SPA's spring choir and orchestra concert, but I am with the Community Chorale! Saturday, April 26 at 7pm — free, just show up. I won't have any family there so would love to see some friendly faces.
ALSO on April 26 (busy day!), 825 Arts produces Speak Out and Lead, a youth-created and run arts festival that is a ton of fun, filled with performances and arts activities.
Then, in May, Hadestown runs at SPA May 16-18. Beatrix is really looking forward to performing in one of her favorite shows. Again, free, just show up!
Her Norwegian dance group also performs for Syttende Mai on May 18 at Norway House. Not sure if she'll be able to perform there due to Hadestown, but we'll see!
If none of this does it for you, there's plenty else I can recommend, from MSPIFF to Giants at MIA to The Moth, but get out and see something! I PROMISE you'll feel better! I might even meet you there!
