New York State of Mind
For Minnesota's fall break off of school, we ended up going to New York for college visits and could not have had a better time! We went out for two reasons — to visit colleges and to have some good family and friend time, and were successful at both.
I'll leave the colleges for later, and focus on the friends and experiences.
We arrived VERY late Tuesday, almost 1am before we got to our friend Dawn's place in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, where we were staying. Usually we stay in a different part of Brooklyn with our friend Julie, but this time we shook it ups little, and we're glad we did, it was lovely! After a warm welcome of homemade banana bread and tea we settled in for the night.
The next day we had some delicious bagels for breakfast and enjoyed some Court Street shopping. We walked around Cobble Hill and fell in love with the area. Beatrix loved the iconic Trader Joe's and the designer stores!
We then headed out to the Drew tour. After that we headed to the other side of New Jersey to see my friend Kate, her daughter Miranda (think Gilmore Girls dynamic), and Kate's new beau, Carl. Mmmm, delicious sushi and ice cream!
Thursday we had a LOT to pack in before going to Sarah Lawrence. We drove into Manhattan, and got a primo parking spot hold a block from the Met. From there, we headed down to Grand Central Station to experience the Dear New York exhibit. One of Beatrix's major influences for her advanced photography project this fall was one of the featured photographers!
Back to the Met to see the amazing George Morrison exhibit, to show Beatrix the Temple of Dendur, and to check out the Superfine exhibit (we would have gone to the rooftop of we had known it was closing for five years!)
After a lunch at a street stall, we headed up towards Sarah Lawrence. On the way, we realized we were driving right past The Cloisters (which had free parking, and which you can get into with your Met tickets on the same day), so we popped in really fast.
It took FOREVER to get back at rush hour, and then we walked through Cobble Hill with Dawn and had dinner in the neighborhood before another late night up talking.
We decided against college visits the next day and had one more bagel breakfast before we met our friends Zach and Kimberley at their amazing shop, Measure Twice.
We then headed over the Frick Museum, which is my favorite museum on earth. It's been closed for years for renovations, and the upstairs changes and the new wing are gorgeous (though I don't like the gift shop quite as much). The Ingres Woman in Blue is magnificent in its new presentation. No photos allowed!
Beatrix likes atmospheric restaurants, so we went to Papillon for a Halloween-themed dinner, and then the new-ish Serendipity3 in Times Square for the iconic frozen hot chocolate, with a stop at the Coach store on the way.
Back in Brooklyn, Patrick and I headed out to a Brooklyn bar-in-a-(former)-brothel for some delicious drinks.
Our last day, we had brunch in Cobble Hill with our friend Julie. From there, we went back to Manhattan for a batch of things: Chelsea Market, to be at the fringe of the No Kings protest, the High Line, banana bread matcha at Blank Street Coffee
