Mamma Mia!

For those who don't know, the entire impetus for this trip has been Beatrix's obsession with one movie...

Thus, the places we had to go to were Skiathos and Skopelos, where the movie was filmed.

I've already shown you images from the clock tower where Sophie mails the invitations to her dads, the old pier where they miss the boat, and of the various streets and rooftops that were used as background.

But today was the true pilgrimage, where we took the ferry over to Skopelos to see:

The church where Sophie got married  — the Chapel of Agios Ioannis. Picture Meryl Streep running up these stairs to "The Winner Takes It All")

Kastani Beach, where Sophie and Sky sing "Lay All Your Love on Me" and Donna's friend Tanya admonishes Sky's friend with "Does Your Mother Know."

There's not actually a pier or beach bar there, but we had a great picnic brought from the Mamma Mia patisserie near our hotel (natch.)

Then it was on to Glisteri Beach, where Sophie picked up her friends and they headed to Villa Donna, and where she and her dads jump off the rocks after their sailing trip. We shared said beach with some free-ranging goats.

The nearby olive groves were beautiful (you might recognize them from where Sophie leaves for her wedding on the back of a donkey).

We thought about looking for one more beach site, but had heard it might be hard to find, so headed into town. Skopelos Town was mostly still closed for the off-season, but we had a cup of coffee in a lovely bar where we kind of crashed a kid's birthday party, then wandered the streets.

We caught the ferry back to Skiathos to have a delicious seafood dinner and head back to our favorite bar ("Gerani Gerani") to have a drink, hang with the cats, and enjoy Tomas' hospitality.

Back to the mainland tomorrow, but Skiathos has laid enchantment to my soul!
