Catmint and Confetti Garden

NO ONE told me that the nesting you go through when sending your kid off to college is very similar to what it's like right at the end of pregnancy.

So we're trying to move back to the other house, and get her packed, and do everything else...and I've decided it's imperative to take care if some long neglected gardens at Summit (you know, the house we're, yes, moving out of...)

There's one bed by the sunroom windows that I traditionally plant zinnias in and it looks great.

But this year, the bunnies decimated them, and all that remained was a big old sunflower I got off the free board. It does look great, but the rest of the bed was weedy and gross.


So I sat up late one night with AI and asked it to garden plan. It kind of sketched a frame, and then I thought about the things I had or had access to: some sedum that have overgrown the front bed, some catmint my friend Sheri had offered me, some oregano at the other house. So I took the original prompt, and then built the garden from there.

Of course, first off was clearing the bed.


Then I augmented the soil, and spent the last couple of days collecting and transplanting the base plants. AI's suggestion — which honestly is not half bad — was to have a base of perennials and then add in some changing, "wow!" annuals every year. This year, that's the sunflower. Oh, and I added in the cute rattan mushroom I got off the free board.


I also kept the suggested name "Catmint and Confetti" because I thought it was cute.

Coya

Our amazing Coya passed today at a little over 15 years of age. Thanks so much to the amazing staff at the Animal Humane Society who helped her go with dignity and grace, and allowed us all to be there with her. When we lost Geronimo, I was low-key looking for another keeshond, and became involved with several keeshond groups online. Most had coalesced around closing down a notorious New York puppy mill, but I made friends all over the country (and in Canada) who cared about the breed. You are all amazing people and I care about you so much. When Wendy found out about a backyard breeder in Western Wisconsin who had a dog on Craigslist, so grabbed Bill (who had Sapphire, one of the puppy mill dogs) and they went to rescue her. Holding On, Letting Go

We're in that liminal phase right now where Beatrix is both an adult and still a youth.  She's old enough to get tickets for Phoebe Bridgers, in Brooklyn, when she's at school this fall, and to put together a group of her new classmates to go. She's young enough that she still needs my ninja ticketing moves (and "her" credit card that's tied to our account) to get them. She's old enough to remember to thank me. She's young enough to forget to check her spam to see if Sarah Lawrence had sent her instructions on how to set up her student portal (which of course they did, some time ago, and she did not notice.) She's old enough to promptly freak out that, in said portal, there are many important and imminent deadlines — and to work on plans for meeting those deadlines.
