Two Shows, Should See

This week we've been lucky enough to see two great performances!

Monday night we went to Bull in a China Shop by Fortune's Fool Productions. It ticked so many boxes in advance for us: great company, exciting new work, set at a historical women's college, at a lovely little space (The Hive in Saint Paul), and FREE tickets (thanks to an MRAC grant). And we left even more impressed, because the performances were great and we really enjoyed ourselves. (I mean, we did come out and have to deal with a parenting-from-halfway-across-the-country situation, but that has nothing to do with the show.)

Three more performances by the time you read this and very limited tickets remain — do yourself a favor and reserve some now!

Then, while you have your browser open, go over to Wonderlust Theater's webpage and get some tickets for A Star Full of Skies, which opened tonight. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one!

I spent much of the day at the City of Minneapolis Arts and Cultural Affairs Civic Imagination convening, and to be honest I did not feel much like going out tonight, but I am SO glad I did. Wonderlust works on a  model of community conversations that lead to a production — in this case, it addressed people values and "how we live in community when we seem so divided as a country." Its other title is The Values Play Experience, and it is loosely tied to The Bacchae. 

Without meaning to give too much away, it's a production that has you make some choices during the performance, but more to the point, fills your head — and heart — with a lot to process afterwards. Patrick and I have not stopped discussing it since we got in the car to drive home, but I would really love to talk it over it with you too. Won't you go see it and then we can get together for a drink?

When I was young, my dad took me to House on the Rock . I never understood why he took me there, and not to Taliesin at the same time...until this trip. The first garden at HOTR Taliesin There's a story (since proved wrong, for any number of reasons), that Alex Jordan built HOTR because he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on a house and Wright refused. Coya

Our amazing Coya passed today at a little over 15 years of age. Thanks so much to the amazing staff at the Animal Humane Society who helped her go with dignity and grace, and allowed us all to be there with her. When we lost Geronimo, I was low-key looking for another keeshond, and became involved with several keeshond groups online. Most had coalesced around closing down a notorious New York puppy mill, but I made friends all over the country (and in Canada) who cared about the breed. You are all amazing people and I care about you so much. When Wendy found out about a backyard breeder in Western Wisconsin who had a dog on Craigslist, so grabbed Bill (who had Sapphire, one of the puppy mill dogs) and they went to rescue her. Once they got her out of there, Wendy needed a home for her, and so 4-year old Coya came to us. Holding On, Letting Go

We're in that liminal phase right now where Beatrix is both an adult and still a youth.  She's old enough to get tickets for Phoebe Bridgers, in Brooklyn, when she's at school this fall, and to put together a group of her new classmates to go. She's young enough that she still needs my ninja ticketing moves (and "her" credit card that's tied to our account) to get them. She's old enough to remember to thank me. She's young enough to forget to check her spam to see if Sarah Lawrence had sent her instructions on how to set up her student portal (which of course they did, some time ago, and she did not notice.) She's old enough to promptly freak out that, in said portal, there are many important and imminent deadlines — and to work on plans for meeting those deadlines.
