Ten Top Things (That You Can Do Too!)

Some of the best experiences I have had in the recent past. Highly recommended! And you can — and should — do them too!

1. Saw Whimsy at Circus Juventas. I actually loathe Willie Wonka, but this mash-up was one of the best shows I've seen CJ do, and I've seen them all. Technically the show is closed, but you could attend their Gala on September 19 and see it, and I would strongly recommend it. The only problem is that you won't see Beatrix in the Gala, unless you want to donate enough miles to us that she could fly home from college for the weekend.

2. Eaten at Animales. When a vegetarian picks a BBQ place for her birthday you know it's something special — and it really was. Don't believe me? Believe Dara. Casual but perfect food. Show-stopping cocktails. Great space. Good prices. I'll meet you there anytime.

3. Received birthday presents from the Grand Hand Gallery and Black Garnet Books. Two amazing, independent stores that will have you swearing off purchasing at soulless national conglomerates because of how much different/better the experience is. (Grand Hand has a special sale right now that's a jewelry consignment sale; bring in your funky artisan jewelry you are tired of and get some fantastic new pieces at a good price.)

4. Saw empty nest at the Fringe. Ohmygod were Laura and Levi spot on in creating a show that defines not only having your kid leave for college, but exactly where we all are (if you are near my age) in life. One more show, 8:30 on Sunday. Do not miss!! Honorable mention if you see something at the Fringe, but really this one is all-around amazing.

5, Had drinks at Tasca Madrid on the night they opened. I've not tried the tapas yet, because we were stuffed from a great dinner at Em Que Viet. But the drinks were fabulous (unusual, tasty, and well-priced), the staff engaging, and the space lovely. Another place I'll meet you anytime.

6. Subscribed to New City magazine online, and thinking about the print version as well. We met the founder when he was in town this week and he was charming and fascinating, but the magazine holds up even without his personality. Sure, it's Chicago-based, but what it says about art and culture and community is literally global in scale. Best addition to my in-box in a long time.

7. Had lunch at Baba's with Beatrix. Those pillowy little pitas — so good! The conversation — even better!

8. Won a photo contest at Lakewood Cemetery. The best part was wandering around deciding what to photograph.

9. Cozy hour at Cooks. 5-6pm, Monday through Saturday. $2 glasses of wine. The perfect quick meeting with someone. Like intermissions, it sets precise timeframe, so you have to make the most of the time. YET ANOTHER place I'll meet you anytime.

10. Coffee from our new espresso machine. Patrick made them perfectly on the first try. I anticipate a beautiful future.

When I was young, my dad took me to House on the Rock . I never understood why he took me there, and not to Taliesin at the same time...until this trip. The first garden at HOTR Taliesin There's a story (since proved wrong, for any number of reasons), that Alex Jordan built HOTR because he wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on a house and Wright refused. Coya

Our amazing Coya passed today at a little over 15 years of age. Thanks so much to the amazing staff at the Animal Humane Society who helped her go with dignity and grace, and allowed us all to be there with her. When we lost Geronimo, I was low-key looking for another keeshond, and became involved with several keeshond groups online. Most had coalesced around closing down a notorious New York puppy mill, but I made friends all over the country (and in Canada) who cared about the breed. You are all amazing people and I care about you so much. When Wendy found out about a backyard breeder in Western Wisconsin who had a dog on Craigslist, so grabbed Bill (who had Sapphire, one of the puppy mill dogs) and they went to rescue her. Once they got her out of there, Wendy needed a home for her, and so 4-year old Coya came to us. Holding On, Letting Go

We're in that liminal phase right now where Beatrix is both an adult and still a youth.  She's old enough to get tickets for Phoebe Bridgers, in Brooklyn, when she's at school this fall, and to put together a group of her new classmates to go. She's young enough that she still needs my ninja ticketing moves (and "her" credit card that's tied to our account) to get them. She's old enough to remember to thank me. She's young enough to forget to check her spam to see if Sarah Lawrence had sent her instructions on how to set up her student portal (which of course they did, some time ago, and she did not notice.) She's old enough to promptly freak out that, in said portal, there are many important and imminent deadlines — and to work on plans for meeting those deadlines.
